The primary distinction between the approaches of Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek during the Chinese Civil War lies in their views on social relationships and class structure within society. Mao Zedong, as a leader of the Communist Party, advocated for a revolution that favored the peasantry and aimed to break down the traditional class hierarchies. His vision emphasized the importance of the rural population and sought to establish a society where the working class and peasants had power and collectively contributed to governance.

On the other hand, Chiang Kai-shek, representing the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), focused more on consolidating power among the existing social elites and maintaining the status quo. He aimed to support the interests of the urban bourgeoisie and landowners rather than promoting an inclusive approach to governance that incorporated the rural populace. This fundamental difference in ideology regarding social structures and the relationships among various classes and groups in Chinese society shaped their respective strategies and legacies during and after the civil war.

While military strategy, impacts of foreign intervention, and methods of gaining support from the rural population are also relevant to their approaches, the core disagreement centers on how they envisioned the organization and hierarchy of Chinese society.
